The Reverend Laina Wood Casillas – Deacon
Rev. Laina and her husband Frank live in El Sobrante, where they have raised a small herd of dachshunds and three children: Jeff, father of young Huck aged 7; Christen, in grad school to be a nurse practitioner; and Justin, a Bronze Star, Purple Heart Army medic recently returned from the Army. They have a family home in Ireland, too, where Rev. Laina’s mother resides.
Having sprung from a family of perfectly lovely agnostics, Rev. Laina discovered the joy of God as a young woman, and she and Frank came to the Episcopal Church. Over the years, she has delighted in serving in a kaleidoscope of ministries: pastoral care, starting food pantries, serving as seminary board Trustee, retreat leader, poverty program work, preacher, workshop leader, youth ministry, worship, evangelism, children’s ministries, officiant for weddings and funerals, baptism and marriage preparation, diocesan service, children’s ministries, street ministry, and church property matters. Her secular profession brings a background of business and real estate to add to her toolkit, which she uses to good purpose in serving the church when the need arises. Rev. Laina likens herself to that kitchen drawer we all have – the place where we go to find the odd useful thing. She says you’ll find her in there along with the ecclesiastical scotch tape, keys, random binkies, scissors, postage stamps and lost retainers.
She especially likes children, dogs, poetry, children, singing, Chablis, arts and crafts, children, picnics, writing, (did we mention children?) Taize worship services, beaches, coconut macaroons, teaching, photography…and very much especially, St. Paul’s.
