When was the last time you played? Nothing structured, nothing with purpose, just spending time for the sake of enjoyment.
If it has been a while, it’s time; summer is calling!
Playtime is the heart of what summer is for me. I love to heat the BBQ grills, spend time hiking or biking, going on camping trips, playing games with friends or grabbing a book to enjoy some quality time under the shade of a tree or umbrella.
As a former Montessori educator, I know play is essential to human development for children, but as adults, we tend to discount it as a frivolous activity. According to play expert Dr. Stuart Brown, we don’t “grow up” out of playtime as we age; rather, play should continue to be part of our everyday lives. In times of stress (like perhaps a pandemic), play is essential to being healthy. It is through play that we find ways to be resilient and creative.
According to Proverbs, God played during creation. The Holy Spirit, known as Wisdom,” was present for creation. As the earth’s foundations were created, Wisdom played and delighted in God’s inhabited world and the human race.
Thomas Aquinas wrote, ” God plays. God creates playing. And Man should play if he is to live as humanly possible and to know reality since it is created by God’s playfulness.” Play may be essential to our spiritual health as well. Play is a time to wonder, celebrate, and delight in God’s creation. It’s a way to tap into that space where we may, for a second, escape into the future reality of God’s Kingdom that God intended for all.
This summer, we are taking on the theme of play, rejoicing in life, and embracing wonder and creativity. Every Saturday evening in July and August, join us outside
for “Camp Compline” where we will enjoy music, occasional crafts, S’mores, and other summer delights.
Let recess begin!
